Frisco Police Installing License Plate Reading Cameras to Reduce and Solve Crime
(January 15, 2024) FRISCO, TX - As part of its ongoing mission to safeguard the citizens of Frisco, the Frisco Police Department is pleased to announce the installation of Flock license plate reading (LPR) cameras to reduce crime and aid in the solving of cases.
Strategically mounted at various locations throughout the city, these LPR devices are designed to capture the rear image of a vehicle as well as its license plate. When a stolen vehicle or vehicle associated with a known wanted suspect from a state or national crime database is detected, the camera sends a real-time alert to officers on patrol. An alert is also generated if a vehicle associated with a missing person in an AMBER or Silver Alert is detected.
Key takeaways related to frequently asked questions about the Flock LPR camera system:
• Flock cameras are in use in more than 5,000 communities across the country.
• Communities using Flock have reported crime reductions of up to 70%.
• Frisco PD’s Flock cameras are not used for traffic enforcement.
• Images collected by the Flock system do not include people or faces.
• Data is only stored for 30 days and is never sold or shared with third parties.
Furthermore, the Frisco Police Department has a policy in place specifying how the information may be used and requiring a justification for each search of the data. The department also maintains a link on its webpage to Flock’s Transparency Portal, where a summary of this policy, as well as usage statistics, can be viewed.
“The addition of the Flock LPR camera system is a technological game changer for our community that will allow greater collaboration with surrounding agencies and provide us the ability to better direct our resources to quickly apprehend felony suspects,” said Frisco Police Chief David Shilson. “I’d like to express my sincere appreciation to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicle’s Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority for providing over $437,000 in grant money to fund the purchase of the system. I’d also like to thank the members of our department for their efforts in identifying the grant funding for this technology and the Frisco City Council for their approval of accepting the grant and their unwavering commitment to public safety.”
